What do prayer and cursive writing have to do with each other? I am excited to share that connection with you!
I have been writing out my prayers for years. Why? Because if I don’t, my mind wanders, my prayers just float off somewhere, and I simply don’t finish. Writing out my prayers prevents all that from happening. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t pray silently, on and off throughout the day, but when I am sitting quietly doing my devotions each morning, I write out my prayers. And I believe that might work for others, maybe you?
Recently I discovered that there are a lot more benefits to cursive writing. Maybe you would like to read about that too.
When I get excited about a topic and start researching, I can get carried away. Titles such as “Why Cursive Handwriting is Good for your Brain”, or “The Case for Cursive: 6 Reasons Why Cursive is good for the Brain”, or “10+ Surprising Benefits of Cursive Writing Practise” or “From Mind to Ink: How Handwriting Boosts Your Well-being”. And those are just the psychological benefits.
Then there were articles about the benefits of writing out your prayers: “Why You Should Write Down Your Prayers” or “Writing Your Prayers Down: the Power of Pen, Paper, and Prayer” or “Can You Pray by Writing?” or “7 Benefits of Writing Your Prayers” or “Praying to God by Writing you Heart Down: The Power of Written Prayers”.
But since all that research may not interest anyone else, I will sum it up for you!
Cursive writing has so many benefits, both neurological and psychological.
Here is a summary of the benefits for our children: “The use of pen and paper gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on. Writing by hand creates much more activity in the sensorimotor parts of the brain,” she added. “A lot of senses are activated by pressing the pen on paper, seeing the letters you write, and hearing the sound you make while writing. These sense experiences create contact between different parts of the brain and open the brain up for learning.”
And what about writing out our prayers? Well according to Christian Writer there are many benefits such as: a soulful expression, a focused connection, a journey of growth, a sense of relief, and a tangible memory.
Just thought I would share something that has worked so wonderfully for me all these years. Praying, journaling, writing – they make great friends.
